Risk Assessment

Production Reflection week 2

Summarise the key points you made this week within your role
This week i had to create a health and safety risk assessment for the mics and the sound desk, I also had to make a sound level script map to make sure that i knew what everything did.

What was the groups response to your ideas/progress?
The group were happy that i had managed to complete this on time and get it on my blogger so that i was on time with next week and all my tasks so that if i was late doing anything i would still have time to catch up.

What has been successful this week?
This week I think everything i did was successful as i managed to complete it with ease and i understood what i was doing.

What do you need to change or develop and why?
I could add more detail to the sound level script so that it is more informative for people reading it who haven't done that job before or i could have thought of more risks for the risk assessment.

How did you work with your hierarchical peers this week? Was it effective?
I didn't really need much help from the group as i knew what i was doing and that i could complete it and knowing that i didn't need to distract someone from their work or make them fall behind in their work.

Production reflection week 3

Summarise the duties you performed this week within your role
This week it was my job to find music and sound effects for the show so that I could put them onto the macbook that was going to be used so on the day i could get the music to play for the right moments without problems so i can easily change to EXT and not have a problem with the music.
What has been successful this week?

This week i managed to find music and sound effects for the show and i put them on to the macbook ready for live day, i also made sure that the music suited the theme of the show and that it went with the target audience and other songs on the show.
What do you need to change or develop and why?

I could find more sound effects that fit the show or find a different range of music that also fits in with the theme, i could do this to make sure that the music i have is good enough and i have enough songs to put with all the other things within the show that i might have missed.
What do you intend to do next week?

Next week i intend to do my part of the script so that they have it for the day and that people know what is happening with my part as well.  I will also try and complete any work on my blogger that hasn't yet been.
How did you work with your hierarchical peers this week? Was it effective?

I had to talk to graphics design to find out if they had any ideas for music and if so what they need it for, i also had to ask around to find out if anyone else needed music or sound effects.

Production Meeting Reflection

For the production meeting we had to talk about our ideas for our music show and why we should make it, We all got to talk about each others and what we liked and why we liked it.  We choose Pick up the vibe because we thought it was a brilliant idea, it fitted the brief and we could see clearly how it was going to turn out.  The fact the brief was 14 to 20 year old and a mainstream audience Pick up the vibe worked really well as the music choice and content was suited to the age range.  I think the order of the show could have been changed slightly, for example I think that the competition could have been played later on in the show and i think room 101 could have been set up a bit differently.

Production Relection 4

Summarise the duties you performed this week within your role
Last week I had to talk about what the sound mixer does by taking photos of the sound mixer and saying how each part works.  I also had to find music and sound affects for each part of the show and I had to fill in my part of the script that has the sound information on it, I just had to say what you would hear for each part.

What has been successful this week?
I managed to get the script and the sound mixer part of my work completed meaning that I can move on to doing the music and sound affects.

What do you need to change or develop and why?
I need to continue with the music and sound affects for the show so we have it in time for the show.

What do you intend to do next week?
This week I plan on completing the music for the show.

How did you work with your team this week?
I had to ask people if they needed music for there part and what sort of music they would need, i also had to work as a team because i needed to know someparts of the script.

Music and SFX planning

I am in charge of the sound for the show we are putting together so it is my job to find music for each part of the show.  The songs i have considered are newly released songs and will suit the shows genre.

Song 1

This song by Imagine Dragons was released in May 2013 and is use on some adverts and some shows.  I think this song would be good to use in the show because it has a good beat and is well known.  However I think that this song may not be the best choice because most people may know this song is in other programmes or adverts and may not want it to be copied and to have a new song for the show.

Song 2

This song was released in august 2011 but it is still listened to and played on music shows, this makes it a good song to use as we know people like Macklemores songs and that this song is still around.  The only bad thing about it is that it was released in August 2011 meaning it isn't the newest song around.  People may not want a show to have music from previous years playing even though the song is still popular.

Song 3

This would also be a very good song to use as most people like Bruno mars' work and that it was released on the 15 January 2013 meaning that it is still a popular song and is still played on the radio.  However people may not like this song for the show because it doesn't have a fast beat.

For the actual show we used different songs and sound effects that fitted in with the show better.  The first song I chose was the three opening songs

Song 1

Intro by The XX is a really good good song for the shows opening as its the first thing you hear and its something that will grab peoples attention.  This song may not be well known like other sings but it is still a really good song to be used for our show.

Song 2

This song was played on the introduction to the show that lasted 7 seconds.  I chose this song because it has a good beat and went with the intro.

Song 3

Million Voices by Otto Knows is a really amazing song as the sound of it makes you want to dance and it fits in with the other two songs before it and doesn't slow the show down but adds to the feeling of fresh new music.

The songs played during the show we songs that we had made videos to ourselves, we chose three of them that went with the theme well.

Main show Song 1

This song is sung by Frances lobo the song Don't know don't care is relate able to the audience as they may of had something like this in their life which makes them like the show even more as they are showing things that apply to them.

During the summer time ball hosted by capital there are a couple of songs that are played that are also well known and liked by the audience

Summer time ball

Calvin Harris and and Ellie Goulding I need your love is played whilst a presenter talks about the artists performing there, as Ellie Goulding is one of the acts in the show it makes sense to play one of her songs.

Main Show Song 2

This song is sung by a new artist called cincere the song is called Why cant you see.  It has good lyrics and is a very good video, both of the presenters are in the video which makes the show interesting as normally you would just have the guest on the show.  The song fits the show really well as it is modern and maybe even relate able for some of the audience.

Main show Song 3

This up beat song is sung by The Big Hurt who sings Low Down Hoe.  This song keeps the show from being a typical show as it isnt like the other songs on the show.  We interviewed the drummer how told us about the song itself.

Dance mash up

We chose the cha cha slide for the dance mash up because it is such a well known song and it says the dances moves and its just such a fun thing to do which appeals the the target audience.

Sound script

This is my part of the script, i was in charge of the sound so i had to add in what you would be hearing and when.

This is a copy of the completed script.  This has everyones parts on it.

Production meeting reflection

What did you like about your idea?
I like my idea because it was unique and other people wouldn't of thought of having their show based on old music up to the present.  I like the name of the show because it sums up exactly what the show is about, and I like the fact that the show will play songs from the top 5 most popular artists of that year each week.  This will enable the younger generation to hear music and see decor from different eras.  They would also be able to see how people dressed and danced back then by showing original clips that could be played whilst the songs are playing.  I think the layout of the studio ties in perfectly with the theme of the show and will be interesting for the younger audiences who wouldn't have seen anything like this before.

What aspects related to the brief?
I think that the theme applies to the brief because music has changed so much over the years and deserves to be remembered as it is such an important thing in people's lives.  The way the music has evolved over the years has led to the types of music that is listened to and enjoyed by people of all ages.

What areas did you think needed development?
If I were to improve my idea I would have the celebrity sing their favourite song of that show.  I could then have the audience vote for their favourite song and at the end of the series have a rundown show of the songs that were voted for over the past series.

Multi camera production

Programme format
I would like my show to have a similar format to Juke box jury,

Juke Box Jury is a show that started in 1959 and ended in 1990, it was a show that had celebrity guests on a rotating panel judging the potential hit of newly released songs.  I would like my show to be similar to this in the way the guest says their views on the song that has just played.

Title of show
I will name my show Backtrack.  I have chosen to name my show backtrack because i want my show to cover music from the 60's to now so the name backtrack suits the show as backtracking is when you go back over stuff and the show will be looking back over the music of the previous decades.

Content ideas
The show will play the top 5 classics between 1960's and now and how people growing up with it thought of it and how people today think of it.  I chose the name Backtrack because I am having songs from previous years and as that's what it focuses on its like going back in time to when the music would have been popular.  There will be a guest/s each week that will talk about the songs being played, they will ask the guest(s) what they thought about them and what made them want to enter the world of music, they will also talk a bit about how they got where they are today and will be asked question that people have sent in for them.  People can tweet and text in to the studio to say what they are thinking about the show and why they enjoy watching it, the tweets will appear on the left hand side of the screen while a song is playing or will be read out by the presenters or guest(s).  There will be a contest where the winner and a friend will get to spend a day in London with the guest(s) of that weeks show with £250 spending money.  The competition will consist of a multi answer question, people can text, tweet, or call in to enter their answer.  They will be asked about the next song that will be played, the question could be about the artist, location or the song itself.  The winner will then be announced after the fourth song.

Running order
The show will start with the presenters introducing the themselves and the show to the audience, they will then say a little bit about what is going to be happening on the show and how people can get in touch with them.  The opening titles will then run after the introduction of the presenters, and once that has finished they will introduce the guest(s) that will be on the show.  The first song will play and while it is playing there will be peoples tweets appearing on the left hand side of the screen.  The song will finish and it will cut back to the presenters and guest(s), they will re introduce the guest for those who may have missed it at the start and they will ask the guest(s) for their opinion on the song and then ask them questions that the people of twitter have sent in.  The second song will play and once that one has finished they will tell them about the competition they may have a chance in winning.  The next song will be played and after it the viewers will be reminded of the competition and some more tweets will be read out, the guest(s) will talk a bit about their music and what got them into it and why they wanted to do that.  The fourth song will be played and they will announce the winner of the competition once it has finished, they will thank the guest(s) for being on the show and will thank all the people that tweeted or text them, the final song will play and they tell the audience what they have been watching and say goodbye while the end credits are rolling across the bottom of the screen followed by the outro.

Studio design
I would have the studio looking like its from the 1960's to now so it fits in with the actual show and makes sense.  I would have the walls, furniture, and, decorations all from different time zones rather than it all being modern or all being out dated the whole show will integrate tastefully and professionally.

Sketch of backgrounds

The first picture is how i would have the layout of the set with just the presenters, they would then change the set when a song is playing to the layout with the presenter and guest; picture below.

Visual style
Camera
I would have close ups to make sure that the audience can see the guest and presenters facial expressions so they can feel apart of what is happening without being there.  Mid shots would be used to see everyone in shot so the guest and presenter.  The audience would like to see both guest and presenter to see the easy rapport between them.  And finally I would use long shots to show the entire of the backdrop and the guest and presenter, i would use this because the audience would like to see what they maybe wearing and to see the whole set.

Graphics
I would have the graphics in the style of how they would look during one of the time periods my show is set in. The picture below looks old and is similar to what i would have in my show.  I like the look of this picture because its very vintage.

Presentation style
The way the presenters and guest will talk is going to be informal because it will appeal to 14-20 year old, most of the shows they will watch the people will be talking casually and they would combine words (conjunction).  Their body language would be welcoming; they wouldn't sit with their arms folded as that is negativity they would use there hands when talking to it isn't just watching people sit still talking.

Practical and Aesthetic reasons.

Live:
Live sports:

Practical reason 1:
They use numerous cameras to film the Rugby match so they can catch everything that goes on easier as if there was only one camera it would be where to put it so it covered everything that went on.  By having loads of cameras they can change to any of the other cameras depending on whats happening and where.
Practical reason 2:
Having many cameras would also greatly reduce any disagreements that could be missed if there was only one camera.  Also having more than one camera makes the audience at home feel more apart of what is going on throughout the match.

Aesthetic reason 1:
The way the shots are make the audience able to fully enjoy the action whether it be close up in detail or slow motion and an extreme long shot.  This makes the audience feel more apart of what is going on and enjoy the atmosphere that is created, at home.

Concerts:  Take that

Practical reason 1:
The coverage of the action in the first part of the video 0.01-0.02 seconds shows a long shot of the audience and the stage, you can see the layout of the stage.  At 0.06-0.10 seconds you can see Take That walking down the steps onto the main stage.  This shot allows you to see everything, what the female dancers and Take That are wearing, and what the stage looks like.

Practical reason 2:
Using Multi camera set up is easier when there is a lot of action to cover like a liver performance.  Take That's concert has hundreds of people watching so the cameras filmed some of their reactions to them seeing Take That, Multi camera allows them to film not only different sections of the stage but also the fans reactions to them singing.  At 3:17 it pans round the stadium to show you how many people have attended, this lasts for 6 seconds then it changes direction and zooms in slightly on the audience and pans for a second (starts 3:17 finishes at 3:24).  This adds the feeling that the viewer is involved in something as immense as this performance and gives them the feeling of excitement.

Aesthetic reason 1:
The visual style of this concert works so well because there are extreme long shots so you can see all of the stage and the backing dancers and the back drops on stage.  The audience at home want to see all this because they want to be able to experience it as if they were at the concert.

Public events:  Margaret Thatcher's funeral

Practical reason 1:
It is beneficial to have more than one camera in this case so they can cover the entire journey from start to finish.  The cameras also capture the mood of the public that have filled the streets to pay their last respects as the funeral proceeds along the route.
Practical reason 2:
If they had one camera covering it all they would miss a vast amount of the funeral.  As this is a massive historic moment it is vitally important to record this for posterity.

Aesthetic reason 1:
The calm atmosphere of the shots give a feeling of peace and finality.  which makes the audience feel apart of this sad moment in time, and the cameras capture the emotions of the people lining the streets to pay their last respects.

Studio:
Game shows: Catchphrase (TV series)

Practical reason 1:
Catchphrase has more than one camera so they can film the studio audience and their reactions to the show, they can have close ups of the presenter and the contestants.  Filming this means that the audience at home can watch the peoples faces and feel apart of what is going on because they can see clearly what is going on and the tension between the contestants.
Practical reason 2:
The producers of the show want value for money by covering every single aspect of the programme so that the audience can enjoy the show at home but seeing everything at the right time.  If they had one camera placed facing the presenter and the contestants it means that you wouldn't be able to see the contestants reactions or anything really well.  By having more than one camera they can make it look even better for the audience at home.

Aesthetic reason 1:
In catchphrase the shots follow on from each other in a very pleasing style picking out the most important moments.  The shots consist of the contestants reactions which makes the audience feel more apart of what is happening.

Chat shows:  The Jonathan Ross Show

Practical reason 1:
Having more than one camera in a chat show means that they can film the guest walking on, the room where the guests wait, the audience, and most importantly the presenter.  Having these cameras means that the audience at home can see the guests reaction and the presenters reactions which makes the audience feel more apart of what is going on.

Practical reason 2:
If there was only one camera the audience wouldn't be able to see all the things that go on in the show, meaning that the audience at home wont be able to see all the stuff that goes on in the studio or in the green room because there is only one camera, so by having more than one the show can cover a number of things.

Aesthetic reason 1:
The audience like being able to see the guest and the host of the show easily and when it is important, so when the host is talking the camera would focus on the presenter so the audience can see them talking and the facial expressions  same for the guest they will either have a close up of them or a mid shot so the audience can have a good look at the guest and what they are talking about.

Magazine shows:  Blue Peter

Practical reason 1:
Blue peter starts off with the presenters entering the studio in an interesting manner, Helen Skelton arrives via helicopter and Barney Harwood via speed boat, they need more than one camera to cover the action, if they didn't they would be stuck for positioning.  They have long shots of both Helen (2:46) and Barney (1:22) as well as close ups of them (1:27 and 1:43).
Practical reason 2:

When they are in the studio it starts off with a mid shot of the presenters which goes into a long shot allowing you to see all of the left side of the studio (4:40).

Aesthetic reason 1:
With blue peter the presenters have to look aesthetically pleasing and have good personalities to appeal to the young audience.  The studio always looks really well laid out but isn't too modern,it looks welcoming and appealing to the young viewers.

Live studio:
Talent show:  Korea's got talent

Practical reason 1:
Talent shows use Multi camera as it allows them to show the audience the person on stage, the judges, and the people watching in the audience and how they react to what they are watching or being told.  When the performer walks onto the stage you can see the that he is standing in front of.  This last for 2 seconds, having this when the man stops walking shows the audience at home the sheer size of how many people he will be performing in front of (0:45-0:47).  You then see the judges when the performer walks on and it then goes into a close up of the first female judges face before they start to talk to him (0:52-0:56).

Practical reason 2:
This talent show is able to makes the most out of having numerous cameras dotted around the room to capture everyone's reactions to however is on stage.  If the show only had one camera they wouldn't be able to place it anywhere to get the same reaction from the people watching at home.  At 4:10-4:12 you see a close up of the female judges and at 4:45-4:50 you see the audience crying over the emotional performance that the man is delivering.  If they only had one camera they wouldn't be able to show their reaction to him.

Aesthetic reason 1:
The audience feel a part of the act as they can see close ups of the singer, the judges and the audience's reactions to what is happening.  The close ups and mid shots help portray the emotion which means that the audience feel like they are watching the act in the studio.
